As of October 2011, Gaddafi loyalists remain in control of his birthplace Sirte and smaller villages around Libya. He was also reportedly receiving support from loyalists near the Algerian and Niger borders.
On 20 October 2011, Al Jazeera reported that the National Transitional Council military chief had confirmed that Gaddafi had died of wounds following his capture.
